Face it: your yard could always use some improvements. Maybe you’re jealous of your neighbor’s manicured lawns, or you want to boost the value of your house. Whatever it is, there’s always a reason to spruce up your yard. In a four-season state like Utah, it could get challenging to tend your lawn. Blizzards, rainstorms, and even lightning are all common in the Beehive State. Here’s a guide to maintain your yard through all seasons:
Winter
Clearing snow off your property is among the biggest challenges during winter. It’s one of the reasons why ATVs from Salt Lake City are so useful. You can avoid the tiring task of using your shovel and remove snow so much faster with an ATV. You improve your family’s safety and avoid expensive fines at the same time.
If you have a garden, remove your dying or dead plants. You can maximize their usage by composting them. Doing this will add nutrients to your soil and minimize the need for chemical fertilizers. It’s also an excellent time to plant winter crops like garlic, peas, and spinach.
Spring
Welcome the season for rebirth by removing all dead leaves and grass blades from your yard. Rake or use your leaf blower until your lawn is spick and span. The winter season can mess up your lawn’s pH levels. HGTV recommends using sulfate to lower the pH level or lime to increase it. The goal is to get a reading between five to seven. Then, you’re ready to plant seeds again if bare patches of land appeared over winter. Use your soil thermometer when you feel the temperature is warming up. It’s important to remember that grass seeds sprout at approximately 65°F.
To protect your lawn from heavy rains, look for spots where water pools and improve the drainage. Don’t mow or walk on your grass after a rainstorm. It’s best to let it be for a while.
Summer
During hot periods, the number one problem is usually hydration. Remember to water your grass consistently during summer. Don’t wait until it turns brown since this can use up the plant’s energy reserves. It’s also advised to mow your lawn at least three inches since taller plants tend to dry slower.
As the sun shines brighter, the insects tend to swarm more. Care for your yard correctly by using non-toxic pesticides and removing dead insects from your property.
Fall
Take the time to fertilize your lawn during autumn. Doing so can prepare your plants’ for wintertime by helping it store food. One of the good things about the fall season is that you can cross off mowing from your chores. Wait until the grass stops growing to do so. Maximize the season by planting your favorite flower or root crop. A gardening expert has called autumn the best time to start planting.
Having and maintaining a vibrant lawn takes time and effort. Each season brings about different challenges and advantages. But if you plan accordingly and start working early, you can get the gardens of your dreams that can withstand any weather change.
